Bree’s Reflection
The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. It is used through out the book by breaking it down into different chapters like the social problems process, claims-making, policymaking, and etc. This approach has been because it helps the person to have the ability to think outside of the box and use critical skills. (pg. 336).
What I like best about learning social problems in the class was having the opportunity to make blogs and pick our own blog groups. I found it interesting that Dr. Simmons came up with that idea. I think that it was very creative of her to do that because that is a way for her to tell if we as a class actually received what she taught via class and the book we read.
The most difficult thing for me was doing Blog 3, which dealt with claims-making. I really didn’t understand the role I had to play as a “claims-maker”. It dealt with different thing like troubling conditions, certain characteristics, the structure of claims, typifying examples, and audience. The process helps develop critical thinking skills by having making accept the ability to be able to think from both sides of problem and being to listen to other opinions without changing where you stand with your decision.

This class has helped me get a better understanding of what social problems are. My favorite social problem was becoming educated on Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
If I had to retake the Social Problems Class, I would not change anything about it. It was a great experience for me! Why? I enjoyed everything especially The Walk Like Wolf Walk.
If I had a friend to take this class, the advice I would give is to be on top of documenting your CE hours inside and outside of the class, and to read the required text for the reading quizzes.

The Constructionist stance is not common when thinking about social problems. The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. (pg. 336) This approach is used in the book because it allows us to use the social problems process. What constructionist cannot do is tell you which conditions ought to concern you. You have your own values, your own sense of what is of it not troubling, what needs to be changed, and what sorts of changes are needed. (pg. 340)
There are many things that I liked about learning social problems such as; the groups, quizzes, and blogs. With us being placed in groups we not only where able to divide the work, but we were able to get to meet new people. The blogs allowed us to learn new concepts in an interactive way that I have never experienced before. Also, when I didn’t understand a concept I was able to take the quizzes and read to gain more information.

The most difficult thing in my opinion would have to be Blog #2, we had to decide on a troubling condition that has already gotten the attention of claimsmakers and activists and resulted in a policy outcome. This was difficult for me because I did not really understand at this point in time what claimsmakers were. By us doing this we were able to go through past policy and examine there outcome.
We had to use the social problems process to determine and examine the effectiveness of the outcome. The process helps develop critical thinking skills by having making accept the ability to be able to think from both sides of problem and being to listen to other opinions without changing where you stand with your decision.

One of the most outstanding things that I liked about this class is that we go to put together a Walk for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. During this time I was able to lean many things about sexual assault that I did not know before. As a class we decided to name the our event Walk Like a Wolf. Being that the Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event did not happen this year, our walk was especially important.

If I would have to retake this class I would have done the blog post in advance instead of wait until the night before it was due. Although the blogs where not that difficult I believe that if I started them earlier, I would have produced better work.
If my friend took this class next semester and asked me for advice, I would tell them to get involved as soon as possible. When there are events they should go to as much as they can. Not for just CE hours, but for exposure to new topics and ideas.
Maya’s Reflection
The Constructionist Approach is an instrument that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. This approach is use in the book to help us break down the process in which we can use to fix different types and/or levels of social issues. The book put each section of this process into different sections of the book in order to go into depth on each topic so we can better understand its usefulness. These are things such process, policymaking, claims-making, so on and so forth. This method is utilized in order to help people develop solutions to benefit matters in different ways that catch audience attention and make an impact that will possibly change a problem.
What I found most difficult about learning about social problems class was Blog #6 it was hard to address issue to make a claim that already has been address. It was also difficult to find things to make people read on this topic because we as a society already know that it is scientifically proven to be a problem.
What I liked best about the social problems class was being a part of the happenings during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It brought and answered some well-deserved questions and answers to a topic I feel is important to discuss especially on a college campus. I very much enjoyed being a part of the Clothesline Project and helping with that because I feel that it gave people of visual of what happens, and I hope that we get to do it again next year.

I think the process helped me by making me think outside the box to put attention on a well needed issue in order to help it for the better. Such as we did with the Walk Like a Wolf it was important to be apart of the publicity so that we could get the word out about the walk to raise money for Sexual Trauma Services.

I think this class help me to open my eyes a bit to acknowledge there are a lot of troubling conditions out there that I was unaware of. Especially though doing the blogs I learned a lot about the topics we chose, and it reminded me that my life isn’t as terrible as some may have in the world.

If I had to retake this class, I would have written down when quizzes where so that I didn’t forget because with everything going on in class it keeps you busy when the quizzes where very simple.
If one of my friends was considering taking this class next semester and asked me for advice on how to be successful, I would tell them to participate in as much as they can that is offered. This will make for great learning and a lot of fun, but also allows them to get there required CE hours without having to stress about it last minute.

Jacobs Reflection

The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. (pg. 336) Constructionism cannot tell you which conditions ought to concern you. This book has not been to tell you what to think about various social conditions, but rather to offer guidelines for how to think about the social problem process. It advocates a moral position, it is that it is desirable for people to think critically about that process, to engage the claims they encounter. (pg. 340)
What I liked best about learning about social problems was the construction of it all. In blog #3we were tasked with claims making and my group chose texting while driving being a serious problem. What I liked is learning about each element that went into this post because at the time we had no idea what exactly we needed to include. But from the claim to conclusion I begin to understand how much goes into identifying and addressing a social problem.
The most difficult thing that I had to learn about social problems in this class was Framing & amp; frame alignment in blog #5. The reason that it was the hardest for me was that we didn’t have a rubric to go by. Another reason that it was difficult for me is I didn’t know all the information that I needed to include for example I didn’t know that all the little segments that went into it. Also, I still had a hard time using WordPress which didn’t help.

The process that we used helped me develop my critical thinking in 2 ways. The first way was how we research a topic. This can be looked at multiple ways but the way that I take it is every piece of information on a topic can be useful even the fun facts in blog #5are meaningful. The other way is how can I convey this piece to make others interested or create a topic that will catch the eye of a reader like we did in blog #8.
If I had to retake this class, I would have changed the pace in which I did my work. the reason that I say this is as a senior I already had a big amount of work to do. But by putting off this work it forced be to pull long nights as well as not presenting my best work possible.
This class has helped me understand just how little that the world knows about certain situations such as money laundering in blog#8. A lot of people don’t even know things like this are going on around them and another thing I realized is that for most people they won’t care until it happens to them. that’s why I think this is very important to share things like this so the world will know.

One recommendation I would give my friend on how to be successful in this class is read the book. The book provides you with a deeper understanding of what is happening the class. The other thing is it tells you everything you need in your blog post so when they are presented with a blog post that doesn’t have a rubric, they will know exactly what they need to do.

KaCherish’s Reflection

The constructionist stance for thinking about the social problems process is not the traditional approach to studying social problem. This approach is intended to give the readers some tools for recognizing, thinking about, and responding to social problems claims. What constructionism cannot do is tell you which conditions ought to concern you. You have your own values, your own sense of what is or is not troubling, what needs to be changed, and what sorts of changes are needed (pg340).

What I liked best about the class was learning new things and being able to place these things into blog post. This was my first time making a blog and it was a fun experience. One of the blogs I liked the most was blog #5 which was on Framing and Frame Alignment. I liked this blog because we chose to do it on the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer. I liked doing this blog because I gained a full understanding of something that I heard about for years.
The most difficult thing that I had to learn about in this class was how to make a claim. I say this because in blog #3 I found it hard to be the claims maker for why texting and driving is a serious problem. I think this was hard because the rubric we had to go off of was very vague, while the later blog instructions were detailed. I also found it hard to upload my part of the blog because other group members were logged in at the same time.
The constructionist point of view allows us to look at things from all perspectives. It makes us realize things that are not as important to us can have a big impact on others. For example, blog # 6 allowed us to follow the Social Problems Process through the story of McDonald’s French Fries. At first, I thought how could this small thing have a big impact, so the topic required me to think and do research and see how it affected the world.

I think this class has taught me how to look at things from others in the society point of view. It allowed me to realize that things that may not affect me personally can have an impact on those around me. I was able to see this with blog #5 when my group did research on the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I don’t know anyone personally effected by the disease, but to know that this disease effects a huge amount of the population makes you think what I can do or what can I help society do to help stop this epidemic.
If I had to retake this class, something I would do differently is take my time on the blog post assignments. I would have read the directions more carefully, so I could have gained a better understanding of what was being asked of me. Often I waited last minute to put information in the blog and I know if I would have taken my time to review things I could have done a better job.

If my friend was going to take this class next semester I would recommend that they read over the blog post instruction thoroughly before they start to work on the blog. I would tell them this because I feel a lot of mistakes made within my own blogs could have been avoided if I, or my group members would have taken a closer look over the instructions.
