Blog #9 Individual Reflections

Bree’s Reflection

The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. It is used through out the book by breaking it down into different chapters like the social problems process, claims-making, policymaking, and etc. This approach has been because it helps the person to have the ability to think outside of the box and use critical skills. (pg. 336).

What I like best about learning social problems in the class was having the opportunity to make blogs and pick our own blog groups. I found it interesting that Dr. Simmons came up with that idea. I think that it was very creative of her to do that because that is a way for her to tell if we as a class actually received what she taught via class and the book we read.

The most difficult thing for me was doing Blog 3, which dealt with claims-making. I really didn’t understand the role I had to play as a “claims-maker”. It dealt with different thing like troubling conditions, certain characteristics, the structure of claims, typifying examples, and audience. The process helps develop critical thinking skills by having making accept the ability to be able to think from both sides of problem and being to listen to other opinions without changing where you stand with your decision.

The process helps develop critical thinking skills by having making accept the ability to be able to think from both sides of problem and being to listen to other opinions without changing where you stand with your decision.

This class has helped me get a better understanding of what social problems are. My favorite social problem was becoming educated on Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

If I had to retake the Social Problems Class, I would not change anything about it. It was a great experience for me! Why? I enjoyed everything especially The Walk Like Wolf Walk.

If I had a friend to take this class, the advice I would give is to be on top of documenting your CE hours inside and outside of the class, and to read the required text for the reading quizzes.

Nigel’s Reflection

The Constructionist stance is not common when thinking about social problems. The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. (pg. 336) This approach is used in the book because it allows us to use the social problems process. What constructionist cannot do is tell you which conditions ought to concern you. You have your own values, your own sense of what is of it not troubling, what needs to be changed, and what sorts of changes are needed.   (pg. 340)

There are many things that I liked about learning social problems such as; the groups, quizzes, and blogs. With us being placed in groups we not only where able to divide the work, but we were able to get to meet new people. The blogs allowed us to learn new concepts in an interactive way that I have never experienced before. Also, when I didn’t understand a concept I was able to take the quizzes and read to gain more information.

personal photo

The most difficult thing in my opinion would have to be Blog #2, we had to decide on a troubling condition that has already gotten the attention of claimsmakers and activists and resulted in a policy outcome. This was difficult for me because I did not really understand at this point in time what claimsmakers were. By us doing this we were able to go through past policy and examine there outcome.

We had to use the social problems process to determine and examine the effectiveness of the outcome. The process helps develop critical thinking skills by having making accept the ability to be able to think from both sides of problem and being to listen to other opinions without changing where you stand with your decision.

One of the most outstanding things that I liked about this class is that we go to put together a Walk for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. During this time I was able to lean many things about sexual assault that I did not know before. As a class we decided to name the our event Walk Like a Wolf. Being that the Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event did not happen this year, our walk was especially important.

personal photo

If I would have to retake this class I would have done the blog post in advance instead of wait until the night before it was due. Although the blogs where not that difficult I believe that if I started them earlier, I would have produced better work.

If my friend took this class next semester and asked me for advice, I would tell them to get involved as soon as possible. When there are events they should go to as much as they can. Not for just CE hours, but for exposure to new topics and ideas.

Maya’s Reflection

The Constructionist Approach is an instrument that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. This approach is use in the book to help us break down the process in which we can use to fix different types and/or levels of social issues. The book put each section of this process into different sections of the book in order to go into depth on each topic so we can better understand its usefulness. These are things such process, policymaking, claims-making, so on and so forth. This method is utilized in order to help people develop solutions to benefit matters in different ways that catch audience attention and make an impact that will possibly change a problem.

What I found most difficult about learning about social problems class was Blog #6 it was hard to address issue to make a claim that already has been address. It was also difficult to find things to make people read on this topic because we as a society already know that it is scientifically proven to be a problem.

What I liked best about the social problems class was being a part of the happenings during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It brought and answered some well-deserved questions and answers to a topic I feel is important to discuss especially on a college campus. I very much enjoyed being a part of the Clothesline Project and helping with that because I feel that it gave people of visual of what happens, and I hope that we get to do it again next year.

Personal Photo

I think the process helped me by making me think outside the box to put attention on a well needed issue in order to help it for the better. Such as we did with the Walk Like a Wolf it was important to be apart of the publicity so that we could get the word out about the walk to raise money for Sexual Trauma Services.

I think this class help me to open my eyes a bit to acknowledge there are a lot of troubling conditions out there that I was unaware of. Especially though doing the blogs I learned a lot about the topics we chose, and it reminded me that my life isn’t as terrible as some may have in the world.

Personal Photo

If I had to retake this class, I would have written down when quizzes where so that I didn’t forget because with everything going on in class it keeps you busy when the quizzes where very simple.

If one of my friends was considering taking this class next semester and asked me for advice on how to be successful, I would tell them to participate in as much as they can that is offered. This will make for great learning and a lot of fun, but also allows them to get there required CE hours without having to stress about it last minute.

Jacobs Reflection

The Constructionist Approach is a tool that gives a person the ability to recognize, think about, and to respond to social problems. (pg. 336) Constructionism cannot tell you which conditions ought to concern you. This book has not been to tell you what to think about various social conditions, but rather to offer guidelines for how to think about the social problem process. It advocates a moral position, it is that it is desirable for people to think critically about that process, to engage the claims they encounter. (pg. 340)

What I liked best about learning about social problems was the construction of it all. In blog #3we were tasked with claims making and my group chose texting while driving being a serious problem. What I liked is learning about each element that went into this post because at the time we had no idea what exactly we needed to include. But from the claim to conclusion I begin to understand how much goes into identifying and addressing a social problem.

The most difficult thing that I had to learn about social problems in this class was Framing & amp; frame alignment in blog #5. The reason that it was the hardest for me was that we didn’t have a rubric to go by. Another reason that it was difficult for me is I didn’t know all the information that I needed to include for example I didn’t know that all the little segments that went into it. Also, I still had a hard time using WordPress which didn’t help.

The process that we used helped me develop my critical thinking in 2 ways. The first way was how we research a topic. This can be looked at multiple ways but the way that I take it is every piece of information on a topic can be useful even the fun facts in blog #5are meaningful. The other way is how can I convey this piece to make others interested or create a topic that will catch the eye of a reader like we did in blog #8

If I had to retake this class, I would have changed the pace in which I did my work. the reason that I say this is as a senior I already had a big amount of work to do. But by putting off this work it forced be to pull long nights as well as not presenting my best work possible.

This class has helped me understand just how little that the world knows about certain situations such as money laundering in blog#8. A lot of people don’t even know things like this are going on around them and another thing I realized is that for most people they won’t care until it happens to them. that’s why I think this is very important to share things like this so the world will know.

One recommendation I would give my friend on how to be successful in this class is read the book. The book provides you with a deeper understanding of what is happening the class. The other thing is it tells you everything you need in your blog post so when they are presented with a blog post that doesn’t have a rubric, they will know exactly what they need to do.

The constructionist stance for thinking about the social problems process is not the traditional approach to studying social problem. This approach is intended to give the readers some tools for recognizing, thinking about, and responding to social problems claims. What constructionism cannot do is tell you which conditions ought to concern you. You have your own values, your own sense of what is or is not troubling, what needs to be changed, and what sorts of changes are needed (pg340).

What I liked best about the class was learning new things and being able to place these things into blog post. This was my first time making a blog and it was a fun experience. One of the blogs I liked the most was blog #5 which was on Framing and Frame Alignment. I liked this blog because we chose to do it on the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer. I liked doing this blog because I gained a full understanding of something that I heard about for years.

The most difficult thing that I had to learn about in this class was how to make a claim. I say this because in blog #3 I found it hard to be the claims maker for why texting and driving is a serious problem. I think this was hard because the rubric we had to go off of was very vague, while the later blog instructions were detailed. I also found it hard to upload my part of the blog because other group members were logged in at the same time.

The constructionist point of view allows us to look at things from all perspectives. It makes us realize things that are not as important to us can have a big impact on others. For example, blog # 6 allowed us to follow the Social Problems Process through the story of McDonald’s French Fries. At first, I thought how could this small thing have a big impact, so the topic required me to think and do research and see how it affected the world.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is both-sides-together-1.png

I think this class has taught me how to look at things from others in the society point of view. It allowed me to realize that things that may not affect me personally can have an impact on those around me. I was able to see this with blog #5 when my group did research on the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I don’t know anyone personally effected by the disease, but to know that this disease effects a huge amount of the population makes you think what I can do or what can I help society do to help stop this epidemic.

If I had to retake this class, something I would do differently is take my time on the blog post assignments. I would have read the directions more carefully, so I could have gained a better understanding of what was being asked of me. Often I waited last minute to put information in the blog and I know if I would have taken my time to review things I could have done a better job.

If my friend was going to take this class next semester I would recommend that they read over the blog post instruction thoroughly before they start to work on the blog. I would tell them this because I feel a lot of mistakes made within my own blogs could have been avoided if I, or my group members would have taken a closer look over the instructions.

Blog #8 Media Attention

Money Laundering

Money laundering is the process of disguising the proceeds of crime and integrating it into the legitimate financial system. Before proceeds of crimes are laundered, it is problematic for criminals to use the illicit money because they can’t explain where it came from and it is easier to trace it back to the crime. After the money is laundered, it becomes difficult to distinguish money from legitimate resources that are financial and the funds can be used by criminals without any detections.

Example

Main Individuals

The main individuals that involved in money laundering are banks, and criminals. The banks are involved because money laundering requires it to pass through one or more banks. The primary strategy against it is to require the banks to preform certain checks and monitor transactions to make sure their accounts are not being used for money laundering. In some cases, the banks may have to file for suspicious activity report (SAR) with law enforcement following a high-risk transaction. In extreme cases, the banks might refuse to do business with a suspicious client.

What needs to be done?

The GFI recommends that eliminating anonymous shell companies and tackling trade misinvoicing. The GFI has 3 main recommendations to address money laundering:

  1. Make all felonies predicate offenses for money laundering. In many countries, certain key crimes such as tax evasion cannot be the basis for a money laundering charge.
  2. Countries should comply with all FATF standards. According to a 2013 OECD report, many FATF countries are poorly compliant on key standards designed to prevent money laundering.
  3. Better enforce existing criminal laws. Bankers who knowingly commit crimes and allow bank accounts to be used to shelter criminal money should be held personally accountable. To date, enforcement has generally focused on moderate-sized fines and promises by banks to improve compliance. No bank should be “too big to jail.”

Headline (rewritten)

How is Money Laundering affecting your pockets?

The revised headline still reflects the facts of the news story, but it makes it seem like it is affecting you even more. The reason behind this is that when you change the title to from a general topic and focus it more on the reader it makes them feel as if they really are being affected as a direct result, they invest themselves into the article even more.

3 Audience

The three different audience we would like to reach about this troubling issue are individuals in their mid to late twenties, business owners, and corporate America.

3 New Headlines

Individuals in their Mid to Late Twenties :

Money Laundering is affecting how people of all ages spend their money

Business Owners :

How does Money Laundering change your cash flow?

Corporate America:

Why is Money Laundering a Billion dollar illegal  business ?

The 3 new headlines still reflect the facts of the news story but they are just worded in a way that would draw different readers in because they may feel like a certain title is more directed towards them as the reader.

Effectiveness of New Headlines

The first head line that is aimed towards individuals in their mid to late twenties will be effective to that audience because it engages that age groups. The way in which money affects individuals pockets peak in their twenties. Twenties are a time when individuals try to choose the best way to invest their money without falling into dept or illegal activities. So this group would be interested in a headline such as
“Money Laundering is affecting how people of all ages spend their money” because people in their twenties are trying to find ways to spend and track their money responsibly. This article based of the title could potential hold information on how to be responsible with money.

The second headline that is aimed towards business owners would gain business owners attention because they might be concerned with the flow of money and how it would impact their business if their business were to be implicated in a money laundering scheme. The headline “How does Money Laundering change your cash flow?” is conversational and catchy. It would gain business owners attention because it might encourage them to look at the flow of their money more and be extra careful not to be involved in things that could alter the flow of money. This article may hold information about what t signs of money laundering to look for within a business.

The third headline that is aimed towards Corporate America would gain that audience attention because it states that money laundering is a billion dollar illegal industry. Corporate America is concerned with gaining the big bucks quick. The headline
Why is Money Laundering a Billion dollar illegal business ?” would gain Corporate Americas attention because it says that money laundering is a billion dollar industry. The dollar amount would encourage them to read the article, and this will encourage them to gain money reasonably without being implicated in illegal activities.

Blog #7 Policy Outcomes in Response to Social Problems

Social Problem Topic #1: Sex Trafficking

Troubling Condition

Sex Trafficking has estimated the economic cost of trafficking related to underpayment of wages and recruiting fees is at least $20 billion annually. The costs to human beings on a personal level are impossible to put into numbers. The problem of human trafficking involves many complex societal problems: poverty, justice, rule of law, human rights, social inclusion.

Policy to Alleviate Troubling Condition

Since 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has gotten reports of 22,191 sex trafficking cases in the US. Since 2016, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has estimated that one in six endangered runaways were likely to be sex trafficking victims. There are nearly 21 million victims of human trafficking around the world. 70% are trapped in forced labor; 26% are children; and 55% are girls and women. The US Department of Labor reports 139 goods from 75 countries were made by child or forced labor.

Policy Critique

This policy is insufficient. There are many laws that protects against human trafficking. Here are a few: The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act (TVPA), The Customs and Facilitations and Trade Enforcement Reauthorization Act of 2009, The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, and The PROTECT Act of 2003.

These laws and regulations apply to the entire United States. There also are state laws that address human trafficking. Most states in the US now consider sex trafficking as a criminal act.

The punishments for human trafficking and related crimes vary by state, but generally we can say the following: Most states have sentences for human trafficking convictions of three to eight years. If the victim was a minor, most states require at least a four year sentence.

Social Problem Topic #2: Immigration and Family Separation

Troubling Condition

Immigration is one of the most diverse issue in the United States. There a numerous amount of consequences that come with being and immigrant. Contrary to popular belief on of the main problems that immigrants face is the risk of deportation. When parents are deported it cause many children to be left alone for a potential to be put in the foster care system or have a chance to be deported. The government separates 65 children a day from parents. A lot of times this happens, and family’s are separated forever. The family’s having are at risk for mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and severe psychological distress increases following the detention and/or deportation of a parent and child.

Policy to Alleviate Troubling Condition

Trump signs order to keep families together, backtracking on claim that only Congress could act
Image from: www.mic.com

A court settlement known as the 1997 Flores Agreement states that children cannot be held with their parents in federal jail, is the cause of  these families separation. As Trump started his search to clear out immigrants many people where deported from the United States. With that families were torn apart due to this new policy that he had initiated. After much controversy the government had to take notice to the amount of separation that happened to these families. The government provided that the court estimated that at  least 2,654 immigrant children were separated from their parents or caregivers as a result of Trump administration policies. So another policy was put into place called Keep Families Together Act. This bill was put in place to stop difference agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, from separating children under the age of 18 from there parents close to the boarder.

Image from: www.bustle.com

Policy Critique

Although this policy helped children to be released back to their parents, it only put it focus to families close to the boarder.  This policy is considered misguided because it is addressing the issue in its entirety. This policy is only dealing with the families that are being separated within 100 miles of the Mexican border. So, families that were not in range for this policy to apply, these families were still in jeopardy of staying separated due to deportation. Also, the families that are from other origins are not being included, therefore disregarding those families and leaving them without any support.

Social Problem Topic #3: Criminal Sentencing

Troubling Condition

pic by: LA Times

California just like all places in the US had a problem with high crime rates. The problem had been that these crimes were committed by the same offenders. To deal with the issue of repeated offenders California decided to induce longer sentences, with hopes that this would alter offenders behaviors. So the birth of the 3 strike law was born. Instead of this law doing what it was intended to do, it resulted in longer sentences for small charges and African Americans quickly populated California prisons. A law that was set out to crack down on criminals lead to over populating prisons and driving up the cost for prison stays.

Policy to Alleviate Troubling Condition

California’s 3-Strikes and You’re Out Law went into effect on March 7, 1994. Its purpose was to increase punishment for individuals that were previously convicted of a felony. In particular those who have previously been convicted of one or more “serious” or “violent” felonies. Individuals on their third strike received a life sentence no matter how small the crime they had the committed.

Policy Critique

The policy did induce longer sentences on repeated offenders, but it lead to other problems. This policy is considered excessive because it lead to over populated prisons and over population meant the need for more monetary funds to keep the prisons running. Keeping people locked up longer posed as another problem in itself because although they were off the streets they still needed to be taken care of.

Blog #6 Social Problems Process, McDonald’s & Linoleic Acid

McDonald’s Summary

In the Revisionist History podcast titled, “McDonald’s Broke My Heart”, the story of how McDonald’s changed the way they made their fries was unfolded. It all started with a wealthy business man by the name of Phil Sokolof suffering from a heart attack at the age of 43. Knowing that the heart attack was due to high cholesterol caused by saturated fat, he decided to save his self and Americans alike by coming up with solutions to help stop the epidemic of heart disease. Coming up with solutions to stop this epidemic started with Sokolof targeting fast food restaurants that are American favorites. Little changed had been made until he decided to attack McDonald’s. He accused and later found evidence that McDonald’s was cooking their fries in animal fat, which is a highly saturated fat. He asked McDonald’s to change their recipe but denied all Sokolof claims until Sokolof decided to publish his findings which caught the attention of Americans and other food companies. McDonald’s gave in to changing their recipe after their public shaming. The public shaming of McDonald’s led to other restaurants stopping the use of saturated fats to liquid based fat. The conclusion of Sokolof findings lead to American society to using vegetable oil when frying foods. By doing this it was suggested that Americans will have a longer life expectancy and less likely would die from heart related diseases.

Sokoloff’s Claim

Basement Tapes Summary

In the Revisionist History podcast titled, “Basement Tapes”, the story of how hidden research could answer a question about the current society is unfolded. This issue all started with a phone call from Chris Ramsden to Robert Franz, the son of the late Dr. Ivan Franz, that concerned a research study that had been done years ago. Years ago, the late Ivan Frantz Jr. decided to do a precise research on the effects of vegetable oil, the suggested substitute for saturated fat. His research would become known as the Traditional Heart Diet Hypothesis. This hypothesis stated that since people are getting rid of saturated fat and replacing it with vegetable oil they will experience lower levels of cholesterol and longer life expectancy and they would be less likely to suffer death that is related to heart disease. The way Frantz tested this hypothesis was by serving saturated fats and liquid fats in the food that would be given to patients in institutions. He used these participants because it was easier to manipulate their diets and keep track of what they ate. Ramsden goal was to analysis the data of this research to find evidence that supported the hypothesis. Ramsden ultimately found that vegetable oil does help lower cholesterol, but he failed to find evidence that supported longer life expectancy and death that was unrelated to heart disease. He also found that the vegetable oil is made up of linoleic acid that is known to build up and cause inflammation. The results of the research did not prove Frantz hypothesis to be right, instead it gave evidence that science had been wrong.

Relationship Between McDonald’s & Ramsden

Both podcasts talked about heart disease and how it related to cholesterol. Both podcasts showed how science can easily persuade the audience to believing something to be true, even if it isn’t thought out well. With the McDonald’s podcast, the focus was on how saturated fats are not good for individuals because it will lead to heart disease and death. In the Basement Tapes podcast, the focus was on lower cholesterol by in taking vegetable oil. Vegetable oil was introduced to take the place of saturated fats in American diets, but the Basement Tapes provided evidence that this was not a good choice. It was not a good choice because it failed to produce evidence for longevity and death that was not related to heart disease.

Changing Nature of Science

Science is defined as the state of knowing, knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding. I think science is both a body of knowledge and a process for finding new knowledge, sometimes to replace the old knowledge. Science is a constantly changing philosophy, that is because society are constantly researching things. Everyday we find more and more information on a variety of topics that can help or hurt us. Science has made tremendous progress, but many scientists recognize that there are still many unknowns and perhaps unknowable. Changes in science affect our daily lives. It can cause us to appreciate these finding because they have potentially great effects, like finding cures to diseases or inventios of new medicine.

Also, it can affect us in a negative way because it leads us as humanity to question the credibility of the findings because often the science behind certain explanation in science go back and forth as to weather the finding will help or hurt us. Like in these podcasts it is clear that the transition of science is changing from liquid based fat, to vegetable oils that we considered better, to only find that the linoleic acid is still bad for us and increases chances of heart and cholesterol problems.

Social Problems Process

Making a New Claim About Linoleic Acid

People should not eat as much Linoleic acid because of its effects on society.  is  In 2014, for instance, nutrition scientists and epidemiologists concluded from an analysis of 13 studies that consuming more linoleic acid, the kind the Minnesota participants substituted for saturated fat, is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and that more is better, provide support for current recommendations to replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat” to prevent heart disease. Linoleic acid could very well play a role in the rising obesity epidemic happening right now.

Audience

The people of the United States are most at risk for being a part of different substances used in their food. No all of these people will agree with what is being put into their food as well as some others wont even care. The reason behind this is that some people care about if an ingredient is good for them then on the other hand some people don’t care as long as its good. There we see a possible segmentation between people caring if it’s healthy or tastegood to you.

Processed Vs. Natural

Grounds

Linoleic acid is overlooked by a vast majority of scientist but is actually toxic when too much is consumed. How much you may be wondering well it isn’t very much in total if a person consumes more than 1% to 2% of total energy intake it’s too much.  Since the introduction of this acid the increase in obesity in Americans has went up from 15% to 35%.The name of the problem we face is substitution. Yes, Linoleic acids may have some good effects if consumed correctly but if it is not it can lead to heart diseases. For example, the amounts of Linoleic acids in processed foods are very high due to the fact that almost all of them have it in them. But where the real problem comes in is the price of foods like this are much cheaper than natural alternatives causing most of Americans to consume more processed foods on the daily making them more at risk to pass the threshold of toxicity of Linoleic acids. Resulting in more health issues.

Cheaper Processed Food

Additional Grounds

Additional Grounds: Linolenic Acid is a worsening condition because it is a fatty acid that in plants and once was used to fry French fries in. It’s also an essential fatty acid that belongs in the omega-3 fatty acids group. Linolenic acid is also a clear colorless liquid. It is highly concentrated in certain plant oils and has been reported to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandin resulting in reduced inflammation and prevention of certain chronic diseases.

Victims: The victims of this worsening condition are the people that don’t know harm that is being done to their body due to fast foods.

Villains: The villains of this worsening condition are the CEO people, the Headquarters, and the company workers of fast food places. They are the villains because they know the ingredients that is used can or is harmful to others, but still continues to use it because they make great profits off of it.

Warrants

People should care about linoleic acid because this is a rising health issue. linoleic acid refers to a group of chemicals found in the fatty acid linoleic acid. Dairy products and beef are the major sources of conjugated linoleic acid in the diet. An average diet supplies 15-174 mg of conjugated linoleic acid daily. linoleic acid might help reduce body fat deposits and improve immune function.  Two clear reasons that people should care about our claim is that the CEOs of big-name companies know how linoleic acid affects a person cholesterol levels and they do nothing about it. Also, research shows that vegetable oil is not always the best alternative for eating healthier.

Conclusions

To conclude, Ramsden believed that by reducing saturated fats, that people would live longer. By him doing this, the people who were eating a seemingly healthy diet died faster. In the people among the deaths people over the age of 65 died faster. Ramsden concluded that vegetable oil did indeed lower a person’s cholesterol, it had negative affects with too much linoleic acid. His hypothesis was proven to be incorrect for the fact that vegetable oil turned out to be bad for you. According to the podcast “McDonalds Broke My Heart”, we learn that McDonalds stopped frying their fries in animal fat because of research done by Ivan Frantz.

One way to alleviate this worsening condition is to cut out fired food out of your diet completely. This is the first step to control this issue with linoleic acids.

Another way to alleviate this issue is to avoid using vegetable oil in their everyday cooking.

Cultural Opportunity

Cultural Opportunity: people who are willing to listen to the movement’s claim

You can take advantage of a cultural opportunity by having world-wide interventions about the affects of linoleic acid

Political Opportunity

Political opportunity: promotes activists arise when the distribution of power among different groups, it shifts so that changes that previously would have been successfully resisted can now be implemented

You can take advantage of a political opportunity by doing follow-ups with the world-wide interventions

As you all know Susan G. Komen is the infamous woman who created the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Summary

The organization was created in 1982 after Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister Susan in which it was named after that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. This was the begging of a global movement. The organization made started from just a sum of $200 dollars and a shoebox full of names and has grown to be the largest nonprofit organization in the world for the fight against breast cancer. Since the foundation more than $2.9 billion has been invested by the organization in the ways of research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 different countries. Since that one promise was made the Susan G Komen organization has helped to reduce deaths from breast cancer by 40 percent. The organization is based out of Dallas, Texas with more than 100,000 survivors and activist helping out as well as a total of over 1.7 million friends and neighbors each year that participate in the events.

Founder Nancy G. Brinker

Insider or Outsider

This organization is an outsider group. They are there to assist and aid those effected by breast cancer and as well as fighting to find a cure. But they do not make laws or legalities from inside the government.

Primary Claim

The Susan G Komen organization’s mission is to “save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.” The primary problem that the group fights for is the elimination of breast cancer. It is an easy condition to combat in earlier stages with the proper detection along with care. The organization fights to aid people that may not can afford the health care to fight this as well as fund the search for a cure. The organization shows why people should care because it’s not just a small problem with an estimated number of more than 2 million cases in 2018 effecting many families and friends. To counter act this and reduce the number of cases and increase the survival rate the group wants to encourage people to be proactive in getting checkups as well as others to donate and help support the organization so that one day a cure can be found.

Beneficiaries and Constituents

Beneficiary: Are people who stand to benefit directly, if a movement is successful

The people who would be beneficiaries are people who actually participates in things like the Breast Cancer March, wears the color the pink whether it’s for the NFL or NBA and etc.

It only takes three, simple steps to make this type of gift. Here’s how to name Susan G. Komen as a beneficiary:
1. Contact your retirement plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution for a change-of-beneficiary form.
2. Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like us to receive and name us, along with the percentage you chose, on the beneficiary form.
3. Return the completed form to your plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution.

Constituent: Are the people who supports the movement

*Conscience constituents: people who contribute money or even join demonstration because they believe in the cause
The people who would be constituents are people who donate to the Susan G. Kamen foundation because they support it

Audience

The Susan G. Komen organization’s audience is essentially everybody, people who are at risk and people who support the movement. The organizations want to inform all men and women because everyone has a risk of getting breast cancer, and those who can be of support to accomplish their goals.

Simonetta Lein on of he organizatons supporters

Many people agree with their claims of this organization. For example, Simonetta Lein is one of the many supports that you will find that works with this Susan G Komen organization. All of Simonetta’s grandparents except for one died of cancer. She states that “I want to do all that I can in order to protect young women and share information so that the next generation could be more protected, knowledgeable and not feel alone.”

The organizations also have much support from the community by rallying communities to come together to support of those in need. The organization address gaps in access and quality of care to improve the odds for all. The organization has many ways to contribute to their cause by being an advocate, donation, race/walk, etc.

The organizations have partners such as American Airlines, Bank of America, Mohawk, The WWE, Ashley Stewart, and others that have contributed to their cause. The partners have raised over 500 million dollars since 1999 in supports to fight breast cancer, touching eleven different countries.

The Susan G. Komen organization has set a goal to reduce the number of breast cancer related deaths by 50% by 2026. They are trying to accomplish this by acting on this, getting donations to support their cause, and getting other involved to pressure their goal.

Diagnostic Frame/Ground

The Susan G. Komen Organization started because the sister of Susan G. Komen, Nancy Brinker promised a dying Susan in 1980 that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Susan eventually passed away and Nancy Brinker wanted to keep her promise. To keep her promise Nancy Brinker started hosting races and collaborating with local facilities to help raise money for those who were suffering from cancer. The goal of this organization is to make men, but especially women alike realize that a problem exists. To illustrate this problem, they have given statistical facts to help understand the issue of breast cancer. One statistic given is that approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will emerge in women in the year of 2019. While another 41,760 women will succumb to cancer related death in 2019.

Figure 1.7 and 2.3 Breast Cancer Incidence in U.S. By Race and Ethnicity
Incidence Rates of US Women

The Susan G. Komen has identified men, but especially women as victims of the villain breast cancer. Women and men fall victim to the disease because they are unaware of the disease severity. On the Susan G. Komen site, it shows that the condition of breast cancer is getting worse therefore individuals should become more aware of ways to help intervene before it gets worse. To show this the website listed in a graph how from 1975-2015 the rate in which breast cancer persisted in black and white women steadily increased over the years. The goal is to stop the increase by catch the cancer in he earlier stages before it is to late. To show the range of people effected a graph of 2011-2015 included different races in the US that are affected by this disease. This graph listed black, white, Asian, Hispanic, and Indian women incidence rates. What is evident in the graph is that more white women (128.6 per 100,000) and more black women (126.9 per 100,000) are affected by breast cancer.

Motivational Frame/Warrants

People should care about this issue because over the years the incident rates of breast cancer has been increasing, but it has the ability to be prevented. What is known about this disease is that with early protection and proper care it can be preventable and cured. It is important that those of high risk or have family history of breast cancer should get tested for it and educate themselves on the disease. The Susan G. Komen Organization gives information about how breast cancer effects all women. With the disease impacting more white and black women most of their warrants backs this up. They use graphs to show how many women will be impact by the disease and how many will die from it. In both cases it is the white and black women. The organization aim at these two groups to do screenings and to seek help early on.

Prognostic Frame/Conclusions

Breast Cancer Screening

The Susan G. Komen Organization recommends screen for breast cancer early on and seeking help if a lump is discovered. Screening early can result in early detection. Early detection can minimize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer occurring. Another thing that is suggested is seeking help if a lump is discovered. It is suggested that with the advent of a lump or feelings of an unusual discomfort in breast to seek help from health provider.

Frame Alignment

Frame alignment is defined as the process by which a communication source, such as a news organization, defines and constructs a political issue or public controversy. The Susan G. Komen organization does this by showing the drastic risk of developing breast cancer.

This organizations is trying to persuade everyone to get involved and be of assistance to improve the statistical odds of breast cancer. They do this by one showing the risk of breast cancer and two raise awareness on this issue by sharing the stories of various people being affect by breast cancer.

This is useful because people become more knowledgeable on the issue and have tangible evidence of who is being affect.

Starr Coleman: She is currently living with MBC

This is an excellent approach because it allows people to spark and emotionally reaction by physically seeing the people that are being affect. This is the most effective approach. People get an opportunity to become a part of these people stories and be able to act. Like the story of Starr Coleman, she is was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in May 2018. She states “I can’t make it go away, but I can make my best self during this time. Concentrating on wellness has really helped me get through along with a great support system.”

Cultural Opportunity

Cultural Opportunity: people who are willing to listen to the movement’s claim

It has taken advantage of cultural opportunities because it’s the people that have listened or even have experienced breast cancer and will or have made generous contributions to the Susan G. Komen foundation

Political Opportunity

Political opportunity: promotes activists arise when the distribution of power among different groups, it shifts so that changes that previously would have been successfully resisted can now be implemented

It has taken advantage of political opportunity because you have different causes you can participate in like The March of Dimes, Becoming an advocate, and many more.

  • Its very sad to hear but about 41,760 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2019 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989. Women under 50 have experienced larger decreases. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

Resource Mobilization

81 cents of every dollar you gave went to help other women while 19 cents went for fundraising activities and administrative costs.
Their Resource Mobilization is through donations from community, business and other various organization. The Susan G. Komen Foundation has trademarked breast cancer prevention and awareness through their fundraising.

Blog #4: Claimsmaking- Revisionist History

Grounds

Many people have a hard time with consistently shooting and making free throws. This doesn’t just go for the everyday recreational player this also goes for professional players as well. A perfect example is Wilt Chamberlain a professional basketball player. He was arguably one of the greatest basketball players of all time but he had one major flaw in his game which was free throws. He was so bad that he was a 40% shooter from the free throw line while the league average in 1961 was 73.3%. But there was a better and more effective way for Chamberlain to shoot. In 1962 he switched to the underhand method aka “the granny shot”. This was the missing link to his already amazing game. After changing to the underhand method for shooting free throws Chamberlain when from a 40% shoot to a 87.5%shooter at the free throw line. This 47.5% percent increase placed him at the top of almost every category on the league leader boardin 1962 as well as earned him the top spot for the most free throws made as well. After adopting the underhand method Wilt Chamberlain became one of the greatest basketball player in history in every aspect of his game.

Additional Grounds

Shooting underhanded has been something that people tend to sweep under the rug because it does not fit the norms of society. Underhand throwing is known as the “granny style” of shooting. In the game of basketball this technique is a sign of being unprepared and lazy. Instead of saying this technique is a granny style we can actuality say it is a game changing technique (a good one at that). This technique can overall challenge its old interpretation. When people like Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Berry, and Canyon Berry used this technique their free throw shootings increased drastically. In the case of Chamberlain when he was ridiculed by his peers he stopped using the technique. When he stopped using the technique the best basketball player of his time went back to being a terrible free throw shooter. Sometimes being different is good, it just takes a person with a strong mentality to realize it.

When mentioning the use of the underhand throwing technique you must mention the kind of people involved. In this case the villains are the players that chose not to use the technique and the victims are the fans and the basketball team. The villains are the players because after having proof that the technique works they still choose to not use it because they are afraid of how it may make them look to their peers. Some players say they do not use the technique because they are simply too cool for that. When in actuality they are being uncool by not utilizing a game changing technique.

The victims are ultimately the fans and the basketball team because what if the team was rooting for that point? What if that point was needed to win that game or to break a tie? All of that would go down the drain if the basketball player chose not to shot underhanded. The fans and team will be devastated at the lost, but it would not have happened if players would choose to under hand shoot.

Warrents

Shooting free throws underhand has been proven to improve success. A scientific analysis has concluded that using a “granny style” underarm technique is the optimal way to take a free throw in basketball. Therefore, people should shoot underhanded because it is easier. Implementing this unconventional approach could make for marginal improvements as a result of this tactic. For professional players, the research proposed by Madhusudhan Venkadesan, who led the work at Yale University, said: “Our mathematical analysis shows that if the thrower is capable of controlling the release angle and speed well, the underarm throw is slightly better for a basketball free throw.” Brancazio also inquired about the benefit of the underhanded throw. He went through a variation of calculations and found that angles of 45 degrees, plus half the angle from the top of the player’s hand to the rim, will give players the best chance of making the shot. Players from anywhere should be motivated to practice these different tatics because they were basically given a certified way to make underhanded shots and gain more points.

Visual Aid

This video is showing the excellence of Rick Berry underhanded his free-throw shots. Are you willing to give it a try? Do you believe it will eventually become a trend in the NBA as well as WNBA?

We let our tester, who played basketball for nearly all of his life try out the underhanded technique. As shown in the picture, he first shot the ball overhanded and made the shot.

personal photo

Next, we let him try the underhanded shot and he made it after about four tries. He says that, “I would’ve made it if I have been shooting like this the entire time, but I don’t mind shooting like this.”

Conclusion

photo from 2ways10days.com

To conclude, we believe that people should shoot under handed because it will give you a greater chance at making the basket. Rick Barry, Chinanu Onuaku, Wilt Chamberland and Canyon Barry all have tried the underhanded technique and have seen major improvement with making shots. Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Barry, had perfected the form in the 1960s and 1970s when, during 14 seasons in the American Basketball Association and the N.B.A., he made 89.3 percent of his free throws. This technique is full prof but will it stand the test of time. Canyon Barry hopefully can carry the form for many more years.

Blog #3-Claimsmaking

  Claim

The claim that is being made is that texting while driving is a serious problem in the U.S. that leads to many deaths. Every day 9 people die in the U.S. from distracted driving. Along with that talking on the phone falls under this category because of the level of distraction from driving that takes place when you use your phone.

Researchers have found that our brains have what is called a “cognitive load“. When one processed to texted and drive it visually impairs you from being able to keep you sight on the rode. Manually you are removing your hands from the steering wheel which allows for less control over the vehicle. Cognitively it cause you to have much focus from the task of driving. This puts your brain in a “cognitive OVERLOAD”. It is said that people have argue that texting and driving is no different that talking to a passenger, but research made a point that is it not. The reason for that is that having another person in the car helps incase a drivers focus is being pulled from their task off driving in a way of having another set of eyes. Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause and accident than driving under the influence.

Audience

The organization that we chose is Teens against distracted driving (TADD). A study done at the University of Utah showed that while people are texting and driving it reduces their attention level down to that of a person with an alcohol level of 0.08%. The audience we have are mainly teens and young adults, and the same as for TADD. Although people know the dangers of distracted driving, they still do it anyway. “For convenience,” responded one person when asked why they would drive distracted knowing the risks involved.

Our audience agrees with our claim, but many teens still text and drive regardless.
Young people and peer education have been a driving force and vision of TADD from the beginning.
Motorists who write text messages while driving are six times more likely to crash than those who don’t text while driving, according to a new study by University of Utah psychologists.

Video showing how texting causes distraction: video from youtube.com

Grounds

Texting while driving is a very troubling condition that can turn a normal drive into a life or death situation. The act of texting while driving is the use of a mobile device to send, read, write, or email a message as well as searching the internet while operating a motor vehicle. The reason why this is such a wide spread problem is that the availability of these devices is very common with around 90.4% of the American population owning some sort of mobile device. This makes it a greater chance that people will use these devices while driving but the reason is hard to pin down. When people text while driving it draws the attention of the driver away from the road. By doing this the driver is no longer aware of to what path they are headed. A study conducted at Virginia Tech set out to find out to what degree it would affect drivers. What they found was drivers that were simply dialing a number were at 2.8 times more likely to crash or nearly crash in small vehicles and 5.9 times more likely in larger vehicles. Then it gets worse as their data shows that a driver texting makes them 23.2 times more likely to wreck or nearly wreck. As we look to the actual numbers of auto accident in America reported by the United States Department of Transportation being around 1.6 million annually. Out of that around half result in injury while about 6,000 result in a death being that of another driver or pedestrian. This is the real reason that texting while driving is such a problem because one text could cost the loss of a life.

Additional Grounds

When making a claim there are five different types of additional grounds that can be covered. These additional grounds include, the worsening situation, a familiar type, the kinds of people affected, the range of people affected, and being able to challenge old interpretations. These additional grounds are used to validate that the troubling condition is an actual problem. For this claim we will use the worsening the situation, the kinds of people involved, and the range of people affected as additional grounds.

Worsening the situation is being able to provide evidence that the problem is getting worse. An example of this that relates to the claim is an article published by The State Newspaper. The article included an analysis on how each year the amount of accidents related to distraction while driving drastically increases. In detail the article provides a list from 2011 to 2014 that shows the number of fatal car accidents due to distraction while driving is also on the rise. Another additional ground is the kind of people involved. This ground identifies the categories of the people that are involved. In relation to our claim, the villains are individuals between 18 and 64. Individuals in this age group all have confessed to using their phones while driving. This is a problem because texting increases the chance of a collision happening and it jeopardizes the lives of all individuals. The range of people affected is an additional ground that suggest that the problem is affects a broad number or certain kind of person. With our claim everyone is effected by the rise in collisions due to texting in driving. The increase in collisions causes an influx on car insurance. Anyone with a vehicle must have car insurance, but “Why must all suffer from the careless act of texting and driving of another?” Texting and driving is a problem that has a big impact on innocent people.

Warrants

Texting and Driving is a serious problem. The reason that everyone should care about this epidemic is because of the risk it puts those who are doing it as well as others that are on the road at the same time. The other reason why everyone should care is it is against the law and the sad part about it is when someone is caught texting and driving an accident has most likely occurred with outcomes such as injury or death to a party involved. The use of warrants could address segmentation by targeting the groups of people that are actively involved in texting and drive in hopes that it would show them the problem behind texting and driving.  It has been reported that more than 58% of teen crashes have been committed due to distracted driving, which texting and driving falls under. It has also been reported that the age group 16 to 19-year-olds are three times more likely to be involved in fatal car crashes. Texting and driving is considered as the “new drunk driving” according to https://www.teensafe.com/distracted-driving/100-distracted-driving-facts-and-statistics-2018/ It’s a known fact that it takes about three seconds for a driver to cause a car crash because his or her attention is being diverted else where. There are three different types of distracted drivers: Visual tasks, Manual tasks, and Cognitive tasks.

  1. The first is visual tasks, such as something as simple as checking a navigation system, which causes a driver to divert his or her attention from the road.
  2. The second driver distraction is a manual task, which is something that requires a driver to remove one or both hands from the steering wheel, such as reaching for a drink or cell phone.
  3. The third driving distraction type is cognitive tasks, causing a driver’s mind and focus to wander to something besides the task of driving.

What should be done about texting and driving? I strongly agree that we should have yearly seminars for the age group of 16 to 19 year-olds. We should be able to show them the unlimited number of outcomes that come from texting and driving. Is a text worth losing your life over?

Conclusions

The first way to keep people from texting and driving is activation an application that will not allow you to access your phone while driving. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, in 2015 alone more than 390,000 people were injured and 3,477 were killed in vehicular accidents caused by distracted driving. Choosing to limit your distractions while driving could literally save lives — Do Not Disturb While Driving can help you do this.

Another way to alleviate this problem is starting to place signs up on roads. Although this is not something people themselves could do, but we believe it would bring the rate of accidents down. In the end we just want people to put the phones down and be safe on the roads

Blog- #2 Social Problems Process

Background

In the 60’s the city of Birmingham, Alabama had been known to be a violent racially segregated city. The city lacked black representatives, the right for blacks to vote, and the ability for blacks to live peacefully among their white neighbors. Crimes against blacks was at an all-time high and bombings in particular was the violent act of choice. On Sunday, September 15, 1963, at the African American 16th Baptist Church, there was a bombing that would forever change the hearts and minds of those living in Birmingham, Alabama. The bombings came as a result of four members of the Ku Klux Klan planting sticks of dynamite beneath the steps of the church. The explosion concluded with four young ladies, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins, and Denise McNair losing their life after a senseless act.

Claims-making

During this time, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist, was one of the most prominent individuals that brought awareness to this issue. He described this incident as, “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.” He was angered by what had happen at the 16th Street Baptist Church. This was a place that was supposed to be sacred to the blacks of the community, but instead it was used to destroy them. At the funeral of the young ladies Martin Luther King made a point to address the issue at hand. With the reading of the eulogy he stated, “The spilled blood of these innocent girls may cause the whole citizenry of Birmingham to transform the negative extremes of a dark past into the positive extremes of a bright future.” He wanted to inform people of the problems that had preexisted before this tragic incident. King wanted the people of Birmingham to realize that change had been needed for a long time. With the bombing and death of the young girls, the time for change had arrived.

As we all know the Alabama Church bombing was a very sad time to endure. This murderous act was committed by the Ku Klux Klan on September 15, 1963, killing four young girls. It shocked the world and urged the Civil Rights Movement.

Public Reaction

Martin Luther King Jr.’s anger fueled him to go to the funeral of the girls that were involved in the Alabama Church Bombing. Since one of the girls parents decided to have a private family funeral, King spoke at the combined funeral of the other three little girls. There he spoke to over 8,000 people. His speech scattered outrage over the country for the mourning of these four little girls.

This in turn cause the March form Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. There were prior marches that took place there in which people face significant brutality from white police, but this march in particular was the one that made history. People form all over the country went to Selma to participate. A number of people made the marched of 54 miles, arm in arms to the capital in Montgomery. People from all around the world watched as these people made their three days journey to the capital. When the achieved their goal, Dr. King made a speech in which to raise awareness on the difficulty in which black voters had been facing when it came to registration to vote. He also spoke of the strides they were making to unity and create a peaceful, equal society.

Policymaking

Civil Rights Act of 1964
Image from britannica.com

The after math of the Alabama bombing was sad but filled with hope as light came from the darkness. This light was created from all the support that was built from the outrage over the four young girls that were killed during the bombing. Two major Acts were passed with the help of this event the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned segregation from race, religion, and national origin in public places. As well the Act brought action on race, religion, national origin, and gender discrimination by employers and labor unions and created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to fight for these people that were a victim of this. Then the Voting Rights Act of 1965 aimed to erase legal barriers that prevented African Americans from voting such as the use of literacy test and poll taxes. Both of these Acts helped set America on the path to where we are today.

Social Problems Work and Policy Outcomes

The Voting Rights Act gave African-American voters the legal means to challenge voting restrictions and improved voter turnout. In Mississippi alone, voter turnout among blacks increased from 6 percent in 1964 to 59 percent in 1969. Since its passage, the Voting Rights Act has been amended to include such features as the protection of voting rights for non-English speaking American citizens.

As an outcome the Voting Rights Act was praise for being one of the most significant pieces of legislation ever passed by Congress to make all citizens equal. It allowed all minorities across the United States, the opportunity to be apart of the voting process. Being able to vote allows us to choose who we want in office and try to make a difference in the society we live in.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed the way that our nation looked at the value of a person. Although this act did not end racism it gave African Americans a voice and a sense of ease while going through their everyday life. The outcome of both Acts where positive, but what African Americans had to go through to get basic humans rights is troubling to say the least.

I have moved a few times throughout the years, but I’ve always found myself back close to my hometown. Newberry College is where I currently attend college. It was not my first pick because u had no intentions of being anywhere close to home, but my aunt swayed my decision by offering her assistance with tuition there first year if I did attend. Nursing was my initial major but it was not a good fit for me. I was given many choices and Psychology was the only one that stuck out to me Through my classes I found it to be a great fit. I declared Psychology as my major and Social Work as my minor. I am involved in the Social Justice Club at the college and I’m also and Resident Advisor. Other than school I do work part-time. I enjoy spending time with my Mom, niece, and newphew. My family is everything to me. Other that that I like to listen to music. I love a varity of music. One identify I see myself as is a daughter. Family is a very important value that I uphold. Like I said previously my Mom is very important to me. She is basically my hero. I know it is cheesy but because of all the things she has endured and how strong of and individual she is I can’t help but think that. She is my motivation to be who I am and become a better person. She is very caring and has instilled that gift in me. Which s why I am on the path I am on to help people and make her proud!

Although starting college was rough for me, I was able to adapt to the campus aspect. I am a Communications major because l love public speaking and networking with others. I am also a Speech and Theater minor. With my degree I would like to go into broadcast journalism and public relations. I am interested in this field because it combines all of my strengths into one place. My other interests include acting and singing and my favorite artist is Beyonce.

An identity that I have is being an open-minded person. This is my identity because I am open to learning new things about people and their situations. I am a multi layered person that has many qualities that some people don’t understand. People come for advice and I try to the best of my abilities to help them with an open mind. Being open-minded has allowed me to get to know people on an intellectual level faster.

Hey, my name is Jacob Warren!

I started my college career off at Montreat Collegea small school in the mountains. After the first year I decided that the majors offered weren’t right for me. When I decided this, I transferred and here I am at Newberry college majoring in criminal justice. The love for golf is the main reason I’m here actually. Since I was about 12, I’ve had this dream that one day I would get to play in college. So, day after day I practiced, and I loved every second of it. That’s the real reason I found my way to Newberry because of the offer to play the sport I loved. I also love to be outdoors, go to concerts, and work so that I can pay for the concerts. Other than that, I just like to relax when I can and hangout with friends.

One identity I see myself as is a craftsman. I know that I have this identity because I always find myself wanting to build new thing. The best part about building new things is the process getting to see a project from start to finish. Then afterwards you can admire what you’ve created. That’s why being a craftsman is one identity I have.
